Rapid Fire

The Points System

by Stuart Wilson

I believe that following our recent games that the point values of armour in 1944/45 are inappropriate.

Let us look at an example.

A King Tiger (points value 130) fires at a 76 Sherman (points value 80) - medium range neither side moving, with its class 1 gun the tiger will hit the Sherman 5 times out of 6 giving a straight kill rate of 5/6* = 83 % or so.

The same situation in reverse - the Sherman hits the Tiger 2 times out of every 6 giving a straight kill rate of one third 33% or so.

So by this simple comparison the King tiger should cost 3 times the amount of a Sherman - or 240 points not 130 points.

The way to achieve this parity is to vary the value of the gun and armour class to reflect the relative balance of armour/gun as the war progresses (this also brings into balance the very high cost of say a KVII early in the war).

I suggest that for late war bashes in particular that we adopt this point system - we could then have 25 Sherman facing a few Panthers - more of a challenge for the German player I say (and more realistic...)
