American Revolution Cavalry

Part 1

By Dave Geisz

There were 7 Cavalry Units that were formed during the war.

The first, Green's 2nd Connecticut Light Horse arrived in Washington's Camp and declared they were exempt from guard duty. Washington sent them packing back to their home state and that was that.

The second consisted of 28 gentlemen from the Philadelphia Area known as Philadelphia Troop of Light Horse (at right).

The third was Pulaski's Legion formed by Count V. Pulaski. They were annihilated during a charge in the Battle of Savannah.

The fourth was raised by Major J. Bland as the "Virginia Horse" - This unit became the 1st continental dragoons known as Bland's Dragoons.

The fifth, Sheldon's 2nd Continental Dragoons was formed in 1776 as a battalion of light horse.

The sixth regiment, Baylor's 3rd Continental Dragoons had a troop known as Lady Washington Guard. This unit was commanded in the Southern campaign by Lt. Col. William Washington and routed Tarleton's Cavalry at the Battle of the Cowpens.

The seventh regiment was the last of the dragoon regiments - Moylan's 4th Continental Dragoons. It was recruited from the middle states of the colonies.
