Battle of Goat Island

Naval Wargame

by Ted Haskell

The battle of Goat Island was an affair of ancients and formed apart of the NOSTROMUNDO game of 1968. This game involved many players by mail and used the Blitzkrieg Board (AN game) and note JJ47 coordinates.

Summary of Action

Contact had been made at 4 P.M. Ships on both sides secured sails and cleared for action. See map for disposition of fleets at dawn.

Both fleets moved forward under oars. Hector won both 1st & 2nd initiative throws. Archers and war engines opened fire as ships came within range.

On 3rd move the Pollux seemed to attempt to ram bow-to-bow. Corsus on the Stag evaded the rush, then hit the hufl of the Pollux and holed her. The Captain attempted to plug the hole, but failed! putting 10 men on the pumps he kept the cripple afloat 2 moves. Finally ordering "Abandon ship" the Captain & 5 marines were lost in the heavy surf. Survisors were picked up by the Pegasus from Goat Island on the 7th move.

The balance of thee action was missile fire and the Luthan marksmen on the Stag and Wolf did most excellently well. The Luthan war engines were promptly loaded and fired with great effectiveness. The Castor fought rear guard action and was hard hit. Pegasus successfully rescued marines from Goat Island. Lutha occupied island and is fortifying it as advance base.
