Lombard's Tables 1809

Elusive Twelve Pounder

by David L. Arneson

Our inadvertent omission of a portion of Lombard's shot tables from Volume II Number 1 led to several enquiries. To take up where we left off, the 12pdr. charged with 4lbs of powder had an estimated muzzle velocity of 1375fps and:

Rise in ElevationRange
0" 300 yards: pt. blank
0.9"534 yds.
.44"640 yds.
.79"748 yds.
1.24"855 yds.
2.13"1,068 yds.

Grape Range for the 4 pounder, 640 yds., canister (containing 63 balls), 427 yds. Charge was 1 1b., 12 oz. of powder.

Grape Range for the 8 pounder, 749 yds., canister, 514 yds. Powder charge: 2 lbs., 12 oz.

Grape Range for the 12 pdr. was 855 yds., canister, 641 yds. Powder charge was 4 lbs., 4 oz.:

Rise in ElevationProjective Range
0"Grape 514 yds.
.53"Grape 640 yds.
1.07"Grape 748 yds.
1.78"Grape 855 yds.
1.60"Case 640 yds.

Fire at ranges over 1,000 yds. was "at greatest random," i.e., it was very inaccurate.
