WWII Campaign North Africa

Using Avalon Hill's Afrika Korps

by Mike Arnovitz

Many of our readers refight the desert campaign with Avalon Hill's Afrika Korps boardgame. Also, judging by the response to the Panzer Armee Afrika article in Issue #1, many use the tabletop to resolve combat. Why not combine the two and refight the campaign using the Avalon Hill mapboard as the overall map and transferring combat to the tabletop. In some cases, combat should be resolved by the Avalon Hill rules, in order that the campaign might not take five years to refight.

Many thanks should go to Mike Arnovitz, now an officer in the Yankee Army. Hike sent me a year ago his complete works on his campaign that he fought solo. It is an amazing piece of reference work. Along with my files, and Mike's works, I can just about cover any point of reference in the campaign. Future articles will deal with the Italian and British forces, both as boardgames and Actual and tabletop TO's.

If you will notice the attack and defense factors are higher than Avalon Hill adovacates. This is for the game buff who will not use tabletop figures. In this manner a whole counter will not be gone if you loose a combat. This will give the commanders a chance to fight a war of attrition and supply.
