Updating The Black Prince

Errata

by Rob Markham

The new Wars of the Roses, This Sceptered Isle, system can be retrofitted to the old quads I did for 3W. I thought I would start the process off by helping you with The Black Prince. For the purpose of demonstrating how to do this, I will focus on the battle of Crecy. If there is enough demand, I will be glad to publish a series of updates with roster sheets for all of the 3W quads to retrofit the new rules.

The Black Prince was a quad of games that covered the battles of Crecy, Poitiers, Navarette, and Verneuil. Crecy and Poitiers remain favorites of mine. To begin with the leaders now have to be rated for tendencies.

In Crecy, the English leaders are as follows:

    Edward III - Controlled
    Prince Edward - Controlled
    Northampton - Controlled

The French leaders are as follows:

    Count of Alencon - Aggressive
    Duke of Lorraine - Aggressive
    King Phillip - Timid

Next, the new system uses step losses rather than use roster sheet (as I do in the four new This Sceptered Isle games, numerical counters from another game can be used. For each step loss, reduce the morale of the unit by one. Use Battle Demoralization levels as printed. Use the game rout markers to note disruption.

For Fire Combat, use the following tables for types not listed on the TSI tables.

Crossbow Firing Table
TargetRange
123
Infantry431
Skirmish321
H Cav211
MaA211
L Cav431

Bow Firing Table
TargetRange
123
Infantry2 11
Skirmish321
H Cav111
MaA111
L Cav321

Spear and Cavalry units hit on a 1 at a target in an adjacent hex.

All skirmish units have their combat strengths reduced to 1.

With these changes, you should be able to fight the battle of Crecy using the new rules. Anyone interested in not buying the new games but just getting the rules may do so for $5 in US; $9 foreign (that includes shipping by priority mail).
