Three Way Dance in France

Battleground WWII Battle Report

By Matt Fritz

Charlie Keller hosted this fun and chaotic France 1940 scenario using Battleground WWII rules. Tom Gallagher played the French who were entrenched near a reiver awaiting a German attack. Unfortunately the Germans had bridged the river downstream and entered the board behind the French. Matt, Eric Schlenger, and Kirby Stiltner played the Germans. Their objective was to exit the board, blitzkreig style. As the Germans flew down the board they encountered little resistance from the out of position French.

After the German motorcycles roared off the board some French armor appeared to try and stop the breakthrough. The tanks and one heroic Frenchman with an ATR and an attituted managed to inflict some losses on the Germans before they exited the board, leaving the French forces mainly intact. Meanwhile the British, under John Burke’s command, entered the opposite end of the board intent on their own objective. They would have moved across the board unmolested if not for Kirby. First Kirby strafed the column with a Stuka until the British shot it down. Then he set up an 88 and sniped at the British tanks until infantry overran the gun.

An interesting subplot was the capture of a French spy. “Ma Mere” broke (craven coward) and spilled her guts to the Germans. She is being turned over to the Gestapo for further interrogation. Any allied claims of atrocities are nothing but propaganda. Leftenant Burke remains puzzled by one thing. What were the French chattering about on the radio? Surely if the blighters wanted help from the British they’d have the good manners to lear the King’s English!
