by Matt Fritz
Phil has been working on adapting the Warhammer 40K units to work using the Warzone rules. At the Feb. Game Day we playtested his conversions. The scenario pitted three units of Space Marines (played by Matt Fritz, John Burke, and Rob McBride) against a combined force of Orks, Gretchin, and a Killer Kan (played by Ceasar Bennett and Tony McBride). The battle developed slowly. Matt's marines seized one of the three objectives. Ceasar's Kan tried to hit the marines with a salvo of missiles but they all landed harmlessly wide of the target. The marines snickered at this feeble attack as they blazed away at an Ork unit, choking the valley with green corpses. Tony's Gretchin seized the second objective in the center of the battlefield and made a nuisance of himself, spraying fire in all directions and pinning down Rob's squad of marines. On the other side of the board John's free marines went toe to toe with a squad of Orks, with both sides taking heavy losses. Only the intervention of the marine captain saved the situation from becoming an Ork victory. The battle got serious for the marines when Ceasar managed to drop a missile into the middle of Matt's marines, killing five of them in one shot. The game ended in a draw, with the Orks holding a small advantage, but not a decisive one. The rules seemed to work well. Hits and saves are rolled on a D20, which allows for greater variation the GW's beloved D6. There is still a lot of die rolling, and the game seems to run slowly, but it's an improvement over Warhammer 40K. Hopefully the game will continue to improve as Phil tinkers with the rules.
