Figure Reviews

Plastic 1/72 Scale
ACW, Alamo, Napoleonic

By Matt Fritz

Imex 1/72 Civil War Figures

Imex's 1/72 scale plastic figures are excellent. There is very little flash, and seams are rare so you won't have to do a lot of trimming. The figures are also reasonably priced and your local hobby store can order them. Shop around and you will most likely find them at a discount. Infantry, cavalry, and artillery are all available. You can buy boxed sets containing Union and Confederates and really build up an army quickly and inexpensively. I used the infantry and artillery with my history club. There are some useless poses, but I converted them to flag bearers. The rest of the figures are well animated and have a lot of detailed. The figures can be seen in the pictures included as part of the article "We are the Flank."

Imex 1/72 Alamo Defenders

Another nice set of plastic figures from Imex. Included in the set of 50 are New Orleans Greys, Tennessee Volunteers, and Texans in civilian clothes. The set also includes flag bearers, Jim Bowie (with knife), Crokett, and Travis. The figures can be seen in the pictures included as part of the article "Make 'em Eat Snakes."

Airfix 1/72 French Infantry Waterloo

I bought this abominable set of plastic figures when I couldn't find any cheap plastic Mexicans for my Alamo game. They are horrible. For starters they are absolutely covered in flash and seams. Forget about trimming them up, it isn't worth the time. There are some nice poses, and the set includes a mounted officer. But you also get some useless figures such as a soldier carrying a wounded comrade over his shoulders. The figures are also strangely out of scale compared with the plastic figures made by other companies. The men are short and pudgy looking. I don't recommend these figures. The box shows what they might look like if painted as French infantry. You can see them painted as Mexicans in the article "Make 'em Eat Snakes."
