Iron Bottom Sound

Savo Island

by Matt Fritz

Ted hosted this scenario used the board game Iron Bottom Sound. The battle was a night action with a line of Japanese cruisers trying to fight their way through some allied ships to attack some landing craft headed for Guadalcanal. The allied command was divided, and caught by surprise. Tony and Rob McBride commanded the Japanese fleet. Matt Fritz, John Lesko, and Phil Willows commanded the Allies.

As the battle began the Japanese jumped John's ships while the rest of the allied force slumbered. Things looked bad for John as he was outnumbered and outgunned. In desperation he decided to make a reckless charge at the enemy. The "Lesko Lunge" proved to be incredibly effective. He did his best to break up the Japanese battle line and rammed two enemy ships. The Japanese were thrown in chaos, splitting their fleet as they scattered in all directions. One unfortunate Japanese ship was accidentally hit by a torpedo fired by one of his sister ships!

As the Japanese tried to break for the landing zone John kept up a short range fire fight, giving as good as he took. The fleeing Japanese ran into John's flagship, the Australia, as Matt's force raced to help. Tony made a desperate run for the landing area, unloading on the Australia as he steamed past. Matt and John teamed up on the Japanese cruisers that had lagged behind, sending them to the bottom. Phil brought in our reinforcements and moved to block Tony.

The Japanese turned tail and tried to flee as the allies pounded them. The Allies had lost the cruiser Australia, and the Destroyer Bagley. The Canberra and Patterson were still afloat with one hull box each. The Japanese losses included five cruisers. This was a decisive victory for the Allies.

I found the rules to be a lot of fun and easy to play. The counters and hex map make maneuvers and firing easier than a miniature game. There are a lot of tables and a lot of dice rolling, but the play is quicker and easier than Seekrieg.
