The Killing Fields of Pleasantville

Brother vs. Brother ACW Scenario

by Matt Fritz

John’s latest Brother vs. Brother scenario turned out to be bloody murder. The premise was simple enough. The Yankees had captured a Rebel general. The Rebels staged a raid to free him. The prisoner was being held in a house under the watchful eyes of a squad of blue bellies, a half squad of zouaves, and a commander. The sons of the south had a cavalry squad, two squads of infantry and a command unit.

Ted and Phil played the confederates and entered the board at the far end. Their plan was to move as quickly as possible (they were only given six turns), splitting their force between the left and right table edges. It was a suicide mission. As they lumbered across the board the Yankees were waiting for them behind a stone fence. Matt and Joe Seliga didn’t have to do anything but wait for them to come in range and shoot.

Ted’s cavalry were the first target and a morale test forced them to charge Joe’s left flank. They evaporated in short order. On the other side of the board Phil was moving forward with all the speed of a Galapagos tortoise. While my men were waiting we spent the time sleeping, eating, playing cards, and building Rome. When he finally managed to get in rifle range some hot dice ripped his squad to shreds. I was all for charging him, just to give him a fighting chance, but Joe talked me out of it.

At this point the south received reinforcements. Unfortunately for them so did the north, and in greater numbers. It was obvious that there was no hope of rescuing the prisoner and the game ended. It will be remember as one of the most lopsided games in club history. Better luck next time you traitorous rebels. Long live the Union!
