Blind Man's Bluff

The Untold Story of
American Submarine Espionage

reviewed by Matt Fritz

By Sherry Sontag and Christopher Drew

The recent loss of the Russian nuclear submarine Kursk is a grim reminder of the dangers of the silent service, even in peacetime. In Blind Man's Bluff the authors remove the cloak of secrecy from America's cold war era submarine espionage program. The intelligence gained through these missions is astonishing. But no more astonishing than the risks and costs. The authors ask the important question "Was it all really worth it?" The reader is left to provide his own answer. There isn't much in this book that can be played out on the wargaming table, but this true account of submariners risking their lives is breathtaking.
