On Wednesday, June 14, elements of the Union and Confederate armies invaded Wildwood Crest Elementary School. Don't be alarmed. As invasions go this one was both peaceful and educational. We were responding to a request from Joe Maloy, the school's social studies teacher. To make history come alive for the seventh grade I was joined by Clark Donlin (portraying Lt. Col. Henry Sawyer of the 1 st NJ cavalry), Charles Keller (148 th PA Volunteer Infantry), Bill Cole (37 th NC), and Sarah Cole. As we strode down the hallway, stepping carefully in our Brogans on the waxed floor, we created quite a stir. It isn't everyday that the students and teachers see Civil War reenactors in full regalia. We took turns displaying and explaining our equipment and uniforms. We were impressed by the intelligent and thoughtful questions from the students. The students were very interested in discussing the causes of the war and why the North was victorious. Sarah created quite a sensation when she told the students that women in those days typically wore a corset, seven pairs of underwear, and a hoop skirt. The girls agreed that the modern mode of dress is far more comfortable and practical. The highlight for the students was when Charlie passed out hardtack and the students started gnawing away. "It's better than the cafeteria food" one student exclaimed in surprise. This was our fifth visit to Crest Memorial. I really enjoy doing living histories and look forward to next year's visit. Our editor, Matt Fritz, is a teacher at the school.
