Yankee Gold

Game

by Matt Fritz

A wagon full of gold which broke down on out in the wilderness became the focal point of a small but intense skirmish between Union and Confederate troops. Training a new generation of historical gamer Confederate troops capture the gold wagon

Phil, Ted, and Kevin each commanded a squad of Confederates, while Ray, Greg, and Mike controlled the Yanks. John took the role of referee using Brother vs. Brother rules. The hottest action was around the wagon itself. Ted's squad got to the wagon first and took cover. Ray's squad moved up and took cover behind some rough terrain. Ted's squad emptied their muskets into Ray's unit causing heavy casualties with lethal dice rolls.

Ray returned fire with very little effect. Ted decided the time was right to charge the Yanks. In the bloody hand to hand fighting that followed only one Yankee trooper managed to escape alive, bravely carrying out the colors. Meanwhile the Yanks tried to send in reinforcements. Kevin's Union squad was devastating Mike's Rebs. After shooting up Mike's Rebs to the tune of 70% casualties, they tried to charge Phil's unit on the flank.

Some crummy dice rolling by Kevin led to a disappointing 4" charge. As the Rebs milled about in confusion, Kevin's three remaining troopers fired volley after volley into their ranks to devastating effect. Meanwhile, Greg had his troops behind a tree line. After seeing the carnage of Ted and Ray's melee, and the Rebs about to run off with the gold, he decided to charge Ted's remaining troops. The charge was dismal as the Yanks did not have the spirit to attack the gold wagon. Out in the open now, Greg's troops recieved horrific flanking fire from Phil's boys hiding behind a stonewall.

After taking horrendous casualties, the battle was finally decided in the Confederate's favor after Greg's counterattack was stopped. Ted's surviving soldiers were able to drag the wagon back to Dixie.
