Yellow Ribbon

Little Big Horn Battle Report

Matt, Charlie and John played a modified version of the Little Big Horn using a set of rules called Yellow Ribbon. The rules were very easy to play.

Twelve beautiful looking troops of cavalry entered the board on a mission to destroy an Indian village. When they found out there were TWO villages they split their force. This was a fatal mistake. The Indians, under the leadership of John "Sitting Bull" Burke planned to string out the cavalry and defeat them in detail. First he sent Charlie "Crazy Horse" Keller against the Cavalry's right flank. His bands succeeded in freezing half the cavalry in place. The inexperience of the cavalry leader proved very costly.

As the blue coats shifted to meet the threat on their left flank Matt "Geronimo" Fritz slammed into the unsuspecting and unprepared troopers on the right flank. Moving out from their hiding place in the trees, and using a river ford unknown to the cavalry, the surprise was complete. One troop was blasted from their saddles at close range. On the second turn two more troops were ridden down like grass in a massive Indian charge. On turn three another troop was routed in a charge from behind.

The massacre was complete when the Indians lured the last troop on the right flank into an ambush by three fresh Indian bands. Many scalps were taken! It wasn't until the end of the game that the cavalry commanders figured out how to use their firepower to full effect. The Indian bands were actually very fragile and could be rendered ineffective with just a few casualties. John spent the game living up to his name "Sitting Bull." He sat and shot the breeze with us during the entire battle. Good job John!
