by Matt Fritz
Matt played in this Battleground game run by Mark Fastoso. The game was in two parts. In part one Maj. Howard's British "Red Devils" stormed Pegasus Bridge. In part two the surviving paratroopers had to hold the bridge against a German counterattack. After landing their glider the British assaulted the bridge. The Germans got lucky, spotted them early, and lit them up with a flare. The Brits overran the machine gun nest and anti-tank gun before the Germans could rub the sleep out of their eyes. But a spirited defense by Sgt. Fritz and his rag tag sentries inflicted serious casualties. Firing with accuracy that Sgt. York himself would envy the sentries forced the surprisingly timid Brits to hit the dirt. Sgt. Fritz dashed into the bunker so he could blow the bridge. In an amazing display of heroism the sergeant killed two British engineers in hand to hand combat and two more with a grenade. He frantically pushed the button again and again, but there was no explosion. Lesson: never trust the Polish conscripts to lay the wires to the demo charges! The British killed Sgt. Fritz with a flurry of grenades and soon had the bridge under control. For the Counterattack the Germans had two Panzers and three squads. The Germans proceeded to teach the Brits a lesson in combined arms. While the infantry located the dug in paratroopers the panzers used their machine guns and well aimed HE rounds to kill the devils. Some clever maneuvering bypassed the only British anti-tank weapon (a PIAT). Before long the tanks were on the bridge and the Germans were victorious. This was a fun game and Mark did a great job of running it. Watch for his name in future PELs and play in one of his games if you get the chance.
