by Matt Fritz
Charlie, Matt, Phil and Kirby met at Tom's to play test Matt's "Gold Fever" Battleground WWII scenario. Each player had a 12 man squad (including a random Hero) to send after the gold in the bank. The American squads managed to cooperate for less than one turn as Phil's opened fire on Matt as soon as he could. Despite this treachery, Matt was the first into the bank where he quickly grabbed 3 of the 12 gold bars and set up a defensive position in one room. Phil then got into a firefight with Tom's Germans that would last the entire game. Phil decided to play the game with his own personal set of victory conditions: kill everyone. Charlie assaulted Matt's position in the bank but was repulsed with heavy casualties and the loss of his squad leader. He managed to withdraw with one gold bar. Matt's spirited defense was led by his hero "Fastball" Freeman who killed three Germans in one turn. The tables turned when Kirby's squad charged in and killed Freeman in hand to hand combat. Enraged by the loss of their Hero Matt's squad refused Kirby's offer of a truce. He soon regretted this decision as Kirby took the upper hand by blasting both Matt's squad leaders with grenades on the same turn. Bloody and under pressure from all sides Matt withdrew into his fortified room while Kirby rounded up the rest of the gold. As the game wound down Tom's squad got into the action and secured two gold bars. On the final turn Charlie's true colors were revealed as he turned on Kirby and stole one gold bar, robbing Kirby of a decisive victory. The final tally: Kirby 4, Matt 4, Tom 2, Charlie 2, Phil 0. Many suggestions were made to spice up the game. These will be incorporated into the scenario and it will be played at the March game day. Don't miss it!
