by Matt Fritz
It was a brutal fight in the high bocage country using Battleground WWII rules. Charlie defended the small town with a squad of elite FJ, a MMG, a Panzer IVH, and a Nashorn. Kirby and Matt with three squads and a Sherman made the American attack. It was bad news for Kirby on turn two when the Sherman became hopelessly bogged in the bocage. It would not be a factor in the game. Matt had better success as Sgt. "Bloodhound" Smith led his two squads. Bloodhound's uncanny ability to detect Germans saved the Americans from an ambush. Being careful to reveal themselves only when they had a significant firepower advantage, the Americans began to dismantle the German defenses. On the far flank Kirby's squad ran into the Panzer IVH without the luxury of a bazooka. His assault was repulsed with heavy losses. Bloodhound's men took out several German positions in succession: MMG, half a squad, then the LMG. A Hail Mary rifle grenade killed the FJ squad leader. In the end the Americans couldn't fight the German armor, and the German armor couldn't fight the American infantry. The Germans withdrew, leaving the Americans with a hollow victory.
