The Fight at Campton's Gap

Battle Report

by Matt Fritz

John refereed this game using his 54mm figures and Brother vs. Brother rules. Matt and James played the Union, while Ian, Paul, and Kirby were Rebs.

John reports: "Both the Union and Confederate forces sent strong patrols into the valley for the purpose of reconnaissance. To the shock of both sides they collided at the gap. The first phase of the fight saw a gallant Union company inflict serious losses on the Rebels. Nonetheless, the Confederates gave as good as they got. Sgt. Myrden's squad was mauled so badly that the survivors skeedaddled.

During the second phase of this fight both sides were determined to break the deadlock and sent in reinforcements. Each side sent in a 12 LB Napoleon and fresh infantry. The battle turned against the Union and Yankee blood soaked the Southern dust. The Southerners paid a high price for their victory. The Confederate artillery was a decisive factor in the victory. The Union gun never got into action."
