The SimCan Newsletter

First 17 Issues

by Joe Scoleri III

The SimCan Newsletter was first published in the Spring of 1980 by Stephen Newberg. It was intended to be the means by which Steve could communicate directly with the people who bought games directly from Simulations Canada, and was not available separately. Over the course of the next 13 years, a total of 28 issues of SCN were produced. Steve initially indicated that he wanted to publish the newsletter quarterly, but it’s clear that he failed math badly in grade school. Or English. Perhaps his own words summarize the situation best: “In our continuing effort to make sure that every newsletter is late, we proudly present the issue in your hands (issue 28, the last issue, dated Winter 1993), which should be mailed no later than 21 March to still qualify as Winter, but will very likely not make it, considering that the Fall 91 issue did not get sent until into Winter 1992.”

The table above provides details for the first 17 issues. The remaining 11 issues dealt exclusively with Simulation Canada’s computer games, and so are likely to be of little interest to the board wargamer.

The columns in the table provide the following information from the newsletter:

No. the issue number as identified in the newsletter

Date the date of publication as identified in the newsletter, as opposed to the actual date they were sent out

Newest Releases the most recent games published at about the same time as the newsletter

Upcoming Releases these games were identified as being the nearest to completion, and thus likely to be the next games to be released. In some instances, e.g., Descent Operations and Hurricane, the games were never released. In others, the names were changed, e.g., Viking to Norsemen. And in one instance, the working title (Rockets Red Glare) was going to change (to Entre Nous), but didn’t.

Special any comments of notable significance have been included.

Errata all errata identified for the board wargames noted above have been included in the respective write-ups for each game in this issue, in addition to other errata which were published in other sources. This also includes suggestions for variants and rule changes.

Scenarios some newsletters included a number of new scenarios for existing games, as noted.

Reviews from time to time, Steve provided short but pithy comments on other publishers’ games when they became available.
