SimCan Boardgames

Alphabetic Listing

by Kohn Kula

The tables on the following two pages contain the list of Simulations Canada’s board wargames, in alphabetical order, with second editions being indicated separately. The following comments pertain to this table.

All games had a single 22”x28”mapsheet.

Title

This is self-evident.

Subtitle

This is self-evident as well. However, a “study” was a more complex simulation than a “game”.

Date

The format is YYQQ where YY is the last two digits of the year, and QQ represents the season (spring, summer, fall and winter, respectively).

Designer

There were only three. The most prolific was Stephen Newberg, followed by Peter Hollinger and William Haggart.

Box

The container, where:
Z = clear plastic ziploc;
C = cardboard box, 9”x12”x1” with full four color boxtop;
P = plastic box, 8½”x11¼”x0.88” with a segmented black bottom and clear top.

Counters

The total was 200 or 255 die cut counters on a single sheet; or 400 die cut counters, swing cut on a dual sheet. The number of blanks are identified if known. Stephen Newberg: “The first edition of I.J.N. was 1000 copies. The rest (of the print run -ed) were a second edition. The only change was a switch in the die cut counters from our Canadian printer and cutter (with whom we were not at all pleased due to wastage rates on cutting, and somewhat shiny stock) to the same printer and cutter that SPI used in NYC. Results were very positive and we never went back to Canadian counter production. Stayed with Reflex Offset and Freedman Die of NYC. Sometime in the mid ’80s the old guys that ran Reflex decided to retire, so the printing moved to Freedman itself (though they doubtless had someone contracted to do it, but I do not know who). Of that second group of games from 1978 only I.J.N. got reprinted, hence only it got a second edition with the new die cut counter producers.”

And later: “The new counters were released in the third quarter of 1979, along with I Will Fight No More Forever, Warring States and Torpedo! And it turns out we did the new counters for Le Grand Empire also, thus in effect making a second edition for it at the same time. This means that the first edition for IJN was 252 units, and the rest were the second edition. For Le Grand Empire the first edition was 272 units, the rest becoming second edition when the new counters arrived. We did not do new counters for Quebec Libre. All Le Grand Empire were in ziploc only regardless of edition, and only the second edition IJN were in boxes. First edition IJN was ziploc and boxes, but I do not have numbers at hand. Interestingly, this could only be determined by looking at old tax records. I had forgotten entirely that we redid the counters for Le Grand Empire also!”

Rule Book

half = 6”x9” folio style rules booklet with hardstock covers;
full = 8½”x11” pamphlet style rules booklet with full 4 color cover. These were intended for use with the plastic container. Correctly folded as per the instructions, this would show through the clear cover and one spine.

Print Run

Stephen Newberg: “Under most conditions you expected about a 10% over- or under-run in printing. Due to there being three component parts, not including the box, the idea is to try to actually come up with the intended number once you count out wastage. I never kept exact figures, but I remember we actually tended to end up about 1% over when everything was considered (that is, about 1010 copies on a supposed run of 1000). The overs normally got given away as review copies or passed out as gifts, etc., so as to keep the sales numbers fitting the inventory numbers for accounting purposes.”

Other Notes

Kriegsmarine was erroneously titled “Kreigsmarine” on the rulebook. The later (1989) computer version of the original board game had the correct spelling on the rulebook cover. The Peloponnesian War, second edition, had incorrect dates on the cover.
