Ballantine Books launched their extended series, the Illustrated History of the Violent Century, in 1972. It was referred to as "extended" because it incorporated Ballantine's earlier Illustrated History of World War III, which itself began as Purnell's Illustrated History of the Second World War.

The three initial categories of Battle, Campaign and Weapon in the Illustrated History of World War II were expanded to include the First World War and were supplemented by three new categories: War Leaders, Politics (originally called Politics in Action) and Human Conflicts.

Defense of Moscow was announced for Campaign but appeared in Battle;
