During WW II, a total of 145 Knights Cross medals were awarded to men of the U-Bootwaffe.

Other combat men also received this coveted award, including:

Kapitanleutnant Helmut Bastian, The award was made 3 November 1944.

Matrosengefreiter Horst Berger, The award was made 8 July 1944.

Ob.-Fernsch.-Matrose Herbert Berrer, The award was made 5 August 1944.

Schr.-Obergefreiter Walter Gerhold, The award was made 6 July 1944

Oberleutnant zur See Johann Krieg, The award was made 8 July 1944.

    EDITOR NOTE - 'HANNO' KRIE6 (199-+-1986) was I.W.O. on U-81 and later, Skipper of that boat before being posted to Kleinkampfflottille 361.

Leutnant Alfred Vetter, The award was made 12 August 1944.

Italian Submariners

Capitano de Fregata Enzo Grossi, Commander IL4R8,4RIGO The award was made 7 November 1942.

Capitano di Corvetta Carlo Fecia di Cossato, C.O. 7AZZOLI The award was made 20 March 1943.

Tenente di Vascello Gianfranco Gazzano-Priaroggia, Skipper of the submarines DA VINCI and ARCHIMEDE The award was made in May of 1943.

Next month, we begin to read of the U-Bootfahrer who were awarded the Knights Cross with Oak Leaf.
