We will report the peacetime submarine disasters, one year at a time, in our KTB Magazine. In 1911, only one submarine was lost. It was the first German loss of a U-Boat. 17 January 1911, the 421 ton German submarine U-3 sank in 66 feet of water in Kiel harbor due to a ventilator being left open. Three men were lost but 27 survived. The boat was salvaged. Below is the running tally of submarines lost in peacetime, which is updated monthly as we look into other submarine disasters.
