During WW II, a total of 145 Knights Cross medals were awarded to men of the U-Bootwaffe. These include: 136 th was Kapitän zur See Kurt Dobratz, Skipper of U-1232. The award was made 23 January 1945. 137 th was Lt. z. S. Johann Limbach, the well-known engineering officer on U-181. 139 th was another friend, Oblt. z.S. OTTO WESTPHALEN (329-LIFE-1987), Skipper of U-968. Award on 23 March 1945. 140 th was Kapitänleutnant (Ing.) Philipp Lichtenberg, Engineering Officer aboard U-516 and U-652. Award made 31 March 1945. 141 st was Oberleutnant (Ing.) Hans Johannsen, Engineering Officer aboard U-802. The award was made 31 March 1945. 142 nd was Obermaschinist Heinz Praßdorf who served aboard U-7. The award was made 21 April 1945. 143 rd was Kplt. HEINRICH SCHROETELER (6238-+-2001), Skipper of U-1023. The award was made 2 May 1945. 144 th was Obersteuermann Karl Jäkel of U-7. Award 28 May 1945. 145 th was Kapitänleutnant d.R. Hans Lehmann, Skipper of U-977. The award was made on 6 June 1945.
