Japanese I-185 and
Italian Serina

by Harry Cooper

I.J.N. Submarine I-185

12 June 1944, the I.J.N. submarine I-185 under command of Oblt. T. Arai fired torpedoes against an American carrier task force and claimed some kind of success against some kind of ship – no confirmation. Arai had previously commanded Ro-108, but this was the only attack by I-185 in World War II as she was counter attacked and sunk by two American destroyers USS NEWCOMB (DD 586) & USS CHANDLER (DD 206) at 15º 50’S x 147º 08’E.

Italian Submarine Serina

14 April 1941, the Italian submarine SIRENA under command of TV Rodolfo Scarelli, fired two torpedoes at a Royal Navy destroyer and reported two hits. No confirmation. This was the only attack initiated by either SIRENA or Scarelli. SIRENA was scuttled by the Italian Navy in the Mediterranean 1943.

This Class of boats fought in the Spanish Civil War. This view of the conning tower of SIRENA shows the changes in her armament. Two 13.2mm Breda Model 31 AA automatic guns were mounted in their normal placement, but additional two 6.5mm Breda Model 30 automatic rifles were added.
