Editorial by Harry Cooper
A couple years ago, I met Lt. Col. Oliver North personally. I was running for local elected office at that time and he was guest of our local Congresswoman, who was a good friend of mine. She introduced us. I’d had great respect for Col. North for many years, and it was great to meet him in person. He was a really nice guy. As most Members probably know, he now has a television show called “War Stories” in which he tells some story from World War II and usually with a lot of splash and hoopla – a lot like that tabloid newspaper already mentioned. Around the end of June this year, he ran a show on Operation PASTORUS in which eight German agents were landed – four on Long Island, NY and four more at Jacksonville, FL. The show was really laughable – until one realizes that thousands of viewers took this as fact – and the show was definitely lacking in fact……a lot! I don’t think he used the word “German” at all in this show – they were all “Nazis” in his text. He stated that this was an Abwehr operation when in fact, it was not. It wasn’t even a Kriegsmarine operation but some goofy scheme dreamt up by the Party under the command of Leutnant Walter Kappe. To further make himself and his show look foolish, he stated that these men came to America to sabotage aluminum and aircraft facilities, which is true – and also to blow up Jewish owned department stores! How stupid! Nobody sends agents into an enemy country to blow up a department store. Pure propaganda, and totally false. Colonel North – you are a better man than to appear as a Bozo the Clown on this foolish looking show. Get better writers.
