“It seems my luck has changed since I found you. I am thrilled to have met such knowledgeable people. You have given me back my interest in this material and really appreciate all that you are doing. I will proudly become a member of such a distinguished organization.”

CHRIS GORDON (6688-2003) writes:
“Am watching a program on the History Channel called Dangerous Missions: U-Boats. Very interesting, and pleasantly surprised to see you appearing now and then as a reference! Very well done! I have not seen any of the ‘dot not’ people being interviewed about their knowledge!”

Well CHRIS, perhaps it is because they really do not have any direct knowledge. The U-Bootfahrer will not help them and one compared that website to the National Enquirer! They are a bunch of well-meaning people who are interested in this history, being given thoughts, theories and oft-repeated rumors wrapped up as if they were fact. God help you if you try to disagree with them!

WAYNE KANEEN (3652-1994) wrote:

“I became interested in U-Boats because my father, Albert Kaneen, used to constantly tell me stories of the N. Atlantic convoys. He was a U.S. citizen that volunteered for the Canadian Navy before Pearl Harbor. He served on the corvette HMCS SNOWBERRY.

He was a big admirer of Kretschmer (122-+-1985) and Prien among others. When I was about 15 I think, I asked him why he seemed to admire the enemy that he tried to kill. He said everything he was able to discover about the U-Boat men was that they were mostly brave, honorable men doing what they thought was the right thing based on the information they were given and that we’re all victims of politics etc. at times. He believed if he had met them at other circumstances, they would be best friends. Back in 1995, I met a veteran that gave me Otto Kretschmer’s address and said that I should tell him that story. I did, and he sent me a card and note I wish my dad had lived to see. He wrote:

    ‘Dear Mr. Kaneen,

Thank you very much for your kind letter which arrived here yesterday. It is true the politicians make the wars and the people have to fight them, and best friends are the fighting men of both sides. I should have liked very much to meet your father.’

Keep up the great job!”

ELLSWORTH BOYD (17-1983) writes columns on wrecks, and recently he directed some starry eyed dived to us – this diver was going to dive the U-Boat wreck off Tampa Bay, Florida. We had to break his heart and tell him that there are no U-Boats sunk off ANY coast of Florida – NONE! He will probably waste his time and dive here anyhow, but here is what ELLS wrote to us: “Thanks for contacting Gene so quickly. You are the greatest! Sharkhunters is my number one “go to” guy for submarines!”

Thanks ELLS. By the way, I still remember that great apple cake your wife made when we met in Baltimore many years ago.

When TIM ROBERTS (6540-2002) sent his renewal, he wrote:
“My three years with SHARKHUNTERS have been wonderful. I cannot conceive of not reading the informative, wonderful articles that one cannot find anywhere else. As a student of history, particularly German, you never cease to please. Thank you.”

JAMES KENNEDY (6284-2001) was a Radarman on LCI 425 during World War II, and he writes:
“I’m really enjoying the publication.”

HARRY COOK (5822-LIFE-1999) recently wrote:
“I love the club and each issue. I read every word. Thank you again for all you’ve done.”

When JOHN WEETH (3623-1994)“I enjoyed the ARCHER-FISH goat story! I rode ARCHER-FISH at least once while qualifying for submarine medicine.”

ROBERT CLAUS (5483-1998) wrote:
“I really enjoy reading my KTB; Through Peter’s Periscope being one of my favorite sections.”
