U-534

There are two very important items connected to this submarine.

NEVILLE BAKER (3200-+-1993), the bombardier on the RAF B-24 that sank this boat, just began his Eternal Patrol. He was in failing health for some time, and is now at rest.

A fellow named Walter Bennett who’s connected with the Nautilus ship museum at Birkenhead England sent an e-mail with comments on our editorial that disaster is possibly looming for U-534. He tells us that the museum is “extremely vibrant and not in any danger of closing”. I told him that it was one of the staff there that told our Member that the museum was going to close. He went on to state that the museum is only open three days each week, which would be Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday.

He also stated that “the owners of the vessel (U-534) have not informed us that they have an alternate plan for the vessel and I am positive that we would be the first to be told.” Well – maybe...

We hope that he is correct, but a representative of the company that owns U-534 told us about a year ago, that they were planning to return the boat to Denmark and asked us if we could invite some of the Skippers to the ceremony. That ceremony was in planning stages when it was decided, temporarily at least, that U-534 would not return to Denmark. That is a beautiful country, but it is small and off the regular tourist path, so one may guess that an attraction such as U-534 would not bring very many tourists – and not too many tourist dollars. Whatever the reason, the move to Denmark did not happen.

We stand by what we reported, as we have inside information that no one else has – including Mr. Bennett. As stated, we hope that this piece of history will be well cared for and preserved for many, many years to come.
