Peacetime Submarine Disasters

1906

by Chester L. Somers (5569-1998)

We will report the peacetime submarine disasters, one year at a time, in our KTB Magazine.

In 1906, two submarines were lost in peacetime. They were:

13 August 1906, the 73 ton French submarine ESTURGEON was lost dockside at Saigon. There were no crew aboard when the boat sank, so there were no losses and no survivors. The submarine was later salvaged.

17 October 1906, the 202 ton French submarine LUTIN was lost off Bizerte, Tunisia in 120 feet of water. She was practicing and there were leaks in the hull plating, causing the boat to take on water and sink. Fourteen men were lost – there were no survivors. The boat was later salvaged.

Below is a running tally of submarines lost in peacetime, which will be updated monthly as we look at other submarine disasters.

England – 3
France – 3
Russia – 1
