During World War II, a total of 145 Knights Cross medals were awarded to men of the U-Bootwaffe. These include: 109th was our dear friend Oberleutnant zur See SIEGFRIED KOITSCHKA (225-+-1986), Skipper of U-616. The award was made 27 January 1944. Prior to getting his own boat, he was I.W.O. on U-552 under ERICH TOPP (118-LIFE-1985). 110th was Kapitänleutnant Hans-Jürgen Hellriegel, C.O. of U-543, U-96 & U-140. The award was made 3 February 1944. 111th was Kapitänleutnant Siegfried Lüdden, Skipper of U-188. The award was made 11 February 1944. 112th was Kapitänleutnant (Ing.) Hans Wessels, Engineering Officer on U-47 and U-198. The award was made 9 March 1944. 113th was Kapitänleutnant Gustav Poel, Skipper of U-413. The award was made 21 March 1944. 114th was Kapitänleutnant Waldemar Mehl, Skipper of U-371. The award was made 28 March 1944. 115th was our friend Kapitänleutnant ALFRED EICK (5941-LIFE-1999), Skipper of U-510. Award was made 31 March 1944.
