I-175 Japanese and
Italian Platino Submarines

I.J.N. Submarines (I-175)

18 December 1941, the I.J.N. submarine I-175 under the command of Kapitänleutnant Kiku Inoue sank 3,253 ton American steamer MANINI 180 miles south of Hawaii. Inoue was later in command of I-31 and attacked the USN battleship USS PENNSYLVANIA at Attu, causing damage.

24 July 1942 I-175, now under of Korvettenkapitän Kameo Uno, attacked the Australian steamer MURADA without any success and no damage.

28 July 1942, I-175 (still under Uno) sank the 2,795 ton French steamer CAGOU NE of Sydney.

3 August 1942 I-175 (Uno) sank the 233 ton Australian trawler DUREENBEE with gunfire at 33º 55’ S x 150º 33’E. These were the only actions initiated by Kameo Uno.

24 November 1943, I-175, now under command of Kapitänleutnant Sunao Tabata, sank the 7,800 ton American escort carrier USS LISCOME BAY at 02º 54’N x 172º 30’E. This was the only action initiated by Tabata and the last by I-175.

I-175, still under command of Tabata, was sunk on 1 Feb. 1944 by the destroyer USS WALKER (DD 517) at 09º 24’ N x 170º 32’E.

Italian Submarine Platino

13 November 1942, the Italian submarine PLATINO under the command of TV Roberto Rigoli, sank the 16,632 ton British steamer NARKUNDA at 36º 52’N x 05º 01’E. In addition to the torpedo attack by PLATINO, air attacks helped sink NARKUNDA.

30 January 1943, PLATINO, now under command of TV Vittorio Patrelli-Campagno, fired four torpedoes & claimed hitting two destroyers and a freighter. She fired two more and claimed a hit on another freighter. The 925 ton Corvette HMS SAMPHIRE was confirmed sunk and a freighter of 8,000 tons was assumed damaged.

7 February 1943, PLATINO (same Skipper) claimed a large ship sunk, but there was no confirmation.

18 February 1943, PLATINO (same Skipper) claimed a large steamer damaged. No confirmation.

18 July 1943, PLATINO (same Skipper) claimed damage on an 8,000 ton freighter. No confirmation.

PLATINO lived through the war and was broken up in 1948.
