World War I

U-Boat Question

by Mark Griffith (3980-2003)

MARK GRIFFITH has a question. He writes:

“I am in possession of a US Naval ensign, a 48 star Flag, about 48” x 24” which is inked:

‘Action with German U-Boat, First Flag to see Action, June 22 1917.’

The date is a question. Do you have any information on this event; the ships involved or the U-Boat number? The Flag was found thrown away in the 1960’s in the Chicago area.”

Anyone with this answer, please let us know and we’ll pass the information on to MARK. I’m wondering who would just throw out an American Flag. There is a ceremony to be observed when an American Flag is no longer serviceable – not the trash can.
