Italian Submarine PERLA
9 July 1942, the Italian submarine PERLA under command of TV Ventura, attacked and damaged the British steamer MANCHESTER CITY. PERLA in Beirut after her capture. This was the only action initiated by either PERLA or Ventura in WW II. On the day of this attack, PERLA was captured by HMS HYACINTH at 33º 50’N x 35º 19’E, rec’d pendant #P-712 in the Royal Navy, later transferred to Greece as HHMS MATROZOS. I.J.N. Submarines (I-174) 4 June 1943, the I.J.N. submarine I-174 under command of Kplt. Nanbu, attacked the American motorship SS EDWARD CHAMBERS with deck gun but the ship evaded 9 rounds of 12cm and escaped undamaged. 16 June 1943, I.J.N. I-174 sank the 5,551 ton American steamer PORTMAR 60 miles SE of Coff’s Hb. 16 June 1943, I-174 attacked the American 1,625 ton LST #469 with torpedo and damaged her. Neither I-174 nor Nanbu made any other attacks during World War II. I-174 was lost on 3 April 1944 in the Inland Sea en route to Truk while under command of Suzuki. The loss was in all likelihood, a marine accident.
