Knights Cross Medals

by Harry Cooper

During World War II, a total of 145 Knights Cross medals were awarded to men of the U-Bootwaffe. These include:

Günther Jahn (at left) 91st was Kapitänleutnant Günther Jahn Skipper of U-596. The award was made 30 April 1943.

92nd was Kapitänleutnant Wilhelm Franken, Skipper of U-565. The award was made 30 April 1943.

Klaus Bargsten (at right) 93rd was Kapitänleutnant KLAUS BARGSTEN (328-+-1987), Skipper of U-563 and U-521. The award was made 30 April 1943. He had also been I.W.O. aboard U-99 under OTTO KRETSCHMER (122-+-1985) and OTTO had great praise about BARGSTEN. When U-521 was surprised off the American east coast and blown to bits while running submerged, BARGSTEN, lying down and reading a book, was the only survivor. He bobbed to the surface in a huge air bubble. Talk about fate!
