by Dick Cole (204-1986)
by Gary Gentile Paperback edition published by Avon, New York in 1989 containing 298 pages, 19 photographs. Available as of August 1989 from the publisher. The U-Boat offensive into North American waters starting in the spring of 1942 is described using information from wartime sources, survivor interviews, official investigations etc. and from standard post-war references. Any accounts of German participation is taken from Allied documents and the author made no attempt to get the German memories. EDITOR NOTE – GARY GENTILE was former Member #26-1984. We had sent a letter to GENTILE, objecting to several comments in the book that indicated that the U-Boats had machine-gunned survivors of sunken ships off the American coast. This simply was not true and apparently our editorial concerning meant nothing to GENTILE as he refused to recant what he had written, so we booted him out of Membership. An unfortunate situation, but we demand accurate history here – and to claim that submarine Skippers murdered helpless men in the water when it is not true, is considered most serious – it is unacceptable.
