U-5075 and SEEHUND Boats

PETER WIHTOL (6465-2001) is looking for photos and information about U-5075, which stands at the American Submarine Museum. He would also love all the information he can get on the MOLCH, BIEBER and SEEHUND.

Yes PETER, we’d love those photos you promised.

More MOLCH! Yes, there will be an announcement soon about these unique submersibles. One of our Members has found and dived a ship that ran onto a mine in the late stages of World War II and there are seven MOLCH carried as cargo. Who is this diver? Where is this ship? Sorry, cannot divulge this information just yet.

USS THORNBACK (SS-418)

GEORGE O’CONNELL (3544-1994) tells us that (SS 418), USS THORNBACK, was converted to Guppy HA in 1953 and sold to Turkey in 1971 where she operated under her new name TCG ULUCALIREIS (S-338) of the Turkish Navy.

This submarine is now a member of the Historic Naval Ship Ass’n and has been on display to the public after 30 years of service in the Turkish Navy, and she is situated at the Haskoy Shipyard (the Rahmi M. Koc Museum) in Istanbul. She is still the property of the Turkish Navy.

Günther Lütjens

Who hasn’t seen that old movie “Sink the BISMARCK” with the theme song sung by Johnnie Horton? The actor who played this German Admiral was Karel Stepanek – and why do we print this? This actor was a relative of JERRY STEPANEK (6689-2003)!

The actor who played Captain Lindemann, Skipper of BISMARCK, was an artist who lived near JERRY. Small world!

SHARKHUNTERS Membership Card

JERRY was cashing a check in his area and when the clerk asked for a second form of identification, he showed her his Sharkhunters Membership Card. It worked, and JERRY got his check cashed.

“Grey Wolf, Grey Sea”

This is the title of a fantastic book written by E. B. GASAWAY (5321-1997) about WILHEML SCHULZ (162-+-1986) and his U-124, the EDELWEIßBOOT, is available on the Internet.

The author hopes they may soon have it again in major bookstores. We hope so too and if you can get a copy of this book, do it! This is a great book about a wonderful man, well loved by his crew and just about everyone else in the U-Bootwaffe.
