During World War II, a total of 145 Knights Cross medals were awarded to men of the U-Bootwaffe. These include: 75th was Korvettenkapitän Harro Schacht, Skipper of U-507. The award was made 9 January 1943. It was the first Knights Cross awarded in 1943. 76th was Kapitänleutnant Albrecht Achilles, Skipper of U-161. The award was made 16 January 1943. 77th was Kapitänleutnant Herbert Schneider, Skipper of U-522. The award was made 16 January 1943. 78th was Kapitänleutnant Ulrich Heyse, Skipper of U-128. The award was made 21 January 1943. 79th was Oberleutnant z.S. Albrecht Brandi. The Knights Cross was awarded 21 January 1943, but it would not be the last time that “Cherri” Brandi would be decorated. He later was decorated with the Oak Leaf, then became one of only five U-Boot Skippers to be decorated with the Crossed Swords and finally, was the second and last U-Boat Skipper to be awarded the Diamonds.
