Italian and Japanese Submarines

IJN I-169

25 July 1942, I.J.N. sub I-169 under command of Kapitänleutnant Katsuji Watanabe, sank the 9,227 ton Netherlands motorship TJINEGARA at 23º 10’ S x 165º 00’E, near Noumea. This was the only attack initiated from I-169 and only the second by Watanabe, who had later commanded I-177 and he sank two destroyers off Peleliu. I-169, then under command of Shinohara, was lost on 4 April 1944 when she foundered and sank at Truk during the American aircraft attack. I-177, still under Watanabe, was sunk 3 October 1944 at 07º 48’N x 133º 28’E by USS SAMUEL S. MILES (DE 183).

Italian Submarines ONDINA

20 June 1941, the Italian submarine ONDINA under command of TV Corrado Dal Pozzo, sank the 3,805 ton Turkish steamer REFAH 40 miles south of Mersin. This was the only attack initiated by the submarine ONDINA or TV Dal Pozzo. ONDINA was sunk on 11 July 1942 by attack from HMAS PROTEA, HMAS SOUTHERN MAID and Royal Navy aircraft.
