Misinformation to the Max

U-869

by Harry Cooper

A fellow sent an e-mail here and while we will tell the story, we will not release any name as it would be just too embarrassing to the person who wrote with these so-called “facts”. Here it is.

He was researching U-869, the ‘milk cow’ that was ordered to go into the harbor at Baytown, Texas and launch the S-Boat that she carried on deck, loaded with elite ‘Nazi’ commandoes, to destroy the Humble Oil refinery which was producing 85% of all the high octane aviation gasoline used by the 8th AF to bomb Berlin.

Wow! That’s a tremendous amount of wrong information and local wartime romance stories to stick into one short e-mail.

U-869 was a normal Type IX-C, not a Type XIV ‘milk cow’.

There is no record whatsoever that this U-boat or any other U-Boat was supposed to go into this harbor and they certainly never had any S-Boats or elite ‘Nazi’ commandoes aboard.

He said he got much of this ‘information’ from that website that the U-Bootfahrer just laugh at. He also said that the Kriegsmarine had not been helpful with his research. No wonder, as there has been no Kriegsmarine since 1945.

If there was ever a person who needed to belong to Sharkhunters it is this fellow. Elite ‘Nazi’ commandoes; S-Boats on the deck of operational U-Boats; in the Gulf of Mexico? Fairy tales for sure.
