The battleship USS PENNSYLVANIA was hit by a torpedo off Okinawa on 12 august 1945 and so became the last major American warship damaged in WW II. She was the only American battleship that was not seriously damaged in the Japanese surprise air raid on 7 December 1941 at Pearl Harbor. Shame on you if you didn’t know this one – surrender ceremonies for the Japanese were held aboard the USN battleship USS MISSOURI in Tokyo Bay. Sir Bertram Ramsey, Allied Expeditionary Force Naval Commander was killed in a plane crash in Paris on New Year’s Day 1945. The highest casualty rate sustained by the US Marines happened during the 81 day Okinawa campaign in 1945. The 29th Marine Corps Regiment suffered 2,821 battle casualties of a group of 3,512 men.
