19 July 1943 the Italian submarine NICHELIO under command of TV Claudio Celli, attacked an unidentified British ship, observed one hit and watched a corvette involved in a rescue on the survivors. This was the only attack initiated by NICHELIO or Celli in World War II. NICHELIO survived the war and was put into reserve status until 1949.
