Japanese and Italian Submarines

I.J.N. Submarines (I-166)

24 December 1941, I-166 (at right) under command of Kapitänleutnant Z. Yoshitome sank 759 ton Netherlands submarine K-XVI.

11 Jan. 1942, I-166 sank 4,979 ton American steamer LIBERTY GLO. The attack took place ten miles SW of Lombok but with the assistance of the destroyers USS PAUL JONES and HNeMS VAN GHENT, she was beached on the SW corner of Bali in the hopes of repairing her, but on 14 January, she capsized and was a total loss.

21 January 1942, I-166 sank the 2,358 ton British steamer CHAK SANG at 15º 52’N x 95º 02’E using torpedoes then the deck gun.

21 January 1942, I-166 sank the 3,193 ton Panamanian steamer NORD at 15º 28’N x 90º 13’E.

14 February 1942, I-166 sank the 2,076 ton British steamer KAMUNING at 08º 35’N x 61º 44’E using torpedoes then the deck gun.

1 October 1942, I-166 now under Kapitänleutnant Makio Tanaka, attacked the 1,201 ton Panamanian steamer CAMILA with deck gun only at 08º 10’N x 77º 41’E and heavily damaged. CAMILA limped on and beached herself at 08º 01’N x 77º 07’E but was abandoned, a total loss.

1 Oct. 1942, I-166 fired a single torpedo at an unnamed transport, claiming a hit with damage. There was no confirmation.

23 November 1942, I-166 sank the 5,332 ton British steamer CRANFIELD at 08º 26’N x 76º 42’E. I-166 under command of Nichiuchi, was sunk on 17 July 1944 by the RN submarine HMS TELEMACHUS at 05º 1-‘N x 100º 00’E.

Italian Submarines (NEREIDE)

12 June 1940 the Italian submarine NEREIDE, under command of C.C. Spano, sank the 8,029 ton Norwegian motor tanker ORKANGER at 31º 42’N x 28º 50’E. One torpedo from NEREIDE set this tanker on fire, and two additional torpedoes from the Italian submarine NAIADE sank her.

16 July 1941, NEREIDE, now under command of TV Augusto Migliorini, fired a torpedo at an unidentified submarine, heard one detonation then opened fire with the deck gun on this submarine, claiming damage. No confirmation.

13 July 1943, NEREIDE was sunk by HMS ECHO and HMS ILEX at 37º 25’N x 15º 25’E.
