The only C.O. of U-194 was Kapitänleutnant Hermann Hesse who had previously commanded U-133.

U-194 was attached as a frontboot to the 10th U-Bootflottille at Lorient.

The conning tower emblem is the heraldic emblem of the city of Hannover, indicating that U-194 was adopted by the city of Hannover.

This boat went through her sea trials in the Baltic, then was dispatched to the North Atlantic to deploy a weather reporting buoy. She was spotted by the RAF aircraft of 120 Squadron and destroyed.

During her short time in the war, U-194 made no attacks on any shipping.
