During World War II, a total of 145 Knights Cross medals were awarded to men of the U-Bootwaffe. These include: 61st was Korvettenkapitän Karl Thurmann, Skipper of U-553. The award was made 24 August 1942. 62nd was Korvettenkapitän Ernst Kals, (photo right) Skipper of U-130. The award was made 1 September 1942. (photo center) 63rd was KK Werner Hartenstein (photo left), Skipper of U-156. The award was made 17 September 1942. 64th was Kapitänleutnant Günther Krech, Skipper of U-558. The award was made 17 September 1942 65th was Kapitänleutnant Otto von Bülow (305-LIFE-1987), (photo right) C.O. of U-404.
