Bloody Winter

Book Review

by Dick COle (204-1986)

By John M. Waters

Hardbound edition published by Van Nostrand, New York in 1967 containing 279 pages, 65 photographs.

Revised hardbound edition published by the Naval Institute Press in 1984, containing 285 pages, 60 illustrations.

Revised edition published in paperback by Jove, New York in 1986, containing 285 pages, 30 photographs.

The author was a participant on the Allied side during the convoy battles of the North Atlantic in the winter of 1942-1943 but this is by no means an autobiography. In fact, the story of this particular critical time of the war is told in a remarkably unbiased manner. Personal narratives abound, and while some are the author’s experiences, equal space is given to the German side.

The revisions are not major, but reflect the additional information later available and changes in evaluations of attacks and sinkings.

EDITOR NOTE – John Waters later became Chief of Police in Jacksonville, Florida and passed away about ten or so years ago. Thanks DICK, always great reading. Any and all Members are encouraged to send us book reviews on any relative book.
