Knights Cross Medals

by Harry Cooper

During World War II, a total of 145 Knights Cross medals were awarded to men of the U-Bootwaffe. These include:

52nd was Kapitänleutnant PETER “ALI” CREMER (114-+-1985), Skipper of U-333. The award was made 5 June 1942. It was said that it was better to have “ALI” as a Skipper than to have life insurance.

53rd was Korvettenkapitän KARL-FRIEDERICH MERTEN (32-1984), (left) Skipper of U-68. The award was made 13 June 1942. He went on to earn the Oak Leaf as well.

54th was Kapitänleutnant Hans-Werner Kraus, Skipper of U-83. The award was made 19 June 1942.

55th was Korvettenkapitän Erwin Rostin, Skipper of U-158. The award was posthumously made 28 June 1942.
