Knights Cross Medals

Of the 145 Knights Cross medals awarded to men of the U-Bootwaffe in World War II, these include:

40th was Korvettenkapitän Klaus Scholz. The award was made on 26 December 1941.
41st was Kapitänleutnant Gerhard Bigalk, Skipper of U-751. The award was made 26 December 1941.
42nd was Kapitänleutnant Eitel-Friedrich Kentrat. The award was made to the Skipper of U-74 on 31 December 1941.
43rd was Kapitänleutnant Robert Gysae. The award was made on 31 December 1941.
44th was Kapitänleutnant REINHARD HARDEGEN (102-LIFE-1985), Skipper of U-147 and U-123. The award was made 23 January 1942 for his successes during Operation PAUKENSCHLÄG. He was the first PAUKENSCHLÄG Skipper on station, and so is known as the ‘Drumbeater’. He is also the only Skipper still living who participated in that operation off the American east coast in January of 1942.
