“I Shall...We Shall Return”

MacArthur’s Leaflets

by Harry Cooper

Remember this in KTB #150 some months ago? ED DOLINAR (6168-2000) reported that they had loaded a few million leaflets on board his boat USS STINGRAY (SS 186) that said “I Shall Return”. It was a repeat of General MacArthur’s pledge to return to the Philippines and these leaflets were to be distributed prior to the American landings to take back the islands from the Japanese. ED told us that these leaflets were all gathered up by American forces and just as suddenly, were replaced by leaflets that said the same thing, but on the front it said “We Shall Return!”. It seems that the people in the propaganda department wanted the people of the Philippines to know there was more than just Doug coming.

Now ED tells us that an organization at Lingayen Gulf is contemplating a memorial that will commemorate the “I Shall - We Shall Return” landing in which STINGRAY was involved. He is planning to reunite as many STINGRAY sailors as he can to take a group over for the dedication of this memorial. Good show ED. Please keep us informed.
