Of the 145 Knights Cross medals awarded to men of the UWaffe in World War II, these include: 36th was Kapitanieutnant Adalbert Schnee (photo). He had been I.W.O. on U-23 under OTTO KRETSCHMER (122-+1985) then Skipper of U-201 and at war's end, of U-2511. The award was made 30 August 1941. 37th was Kapitanleutnant Rolf Mutzelberg, Skipper of U-203. The award was made on 17 November 1941. Mutzelberg was killed in a strange accident on 11 September 1942. They were in a safe area of the sea, and Mutzelberg allowed some of his men to swim in the cool waters. Mutzelberg himself dived off the bridge, but not far enough out to clear the saddle tanks of his boat. He struck his head, and was killed. 38th was Kapitanleutnant Ernst Mengersen, Skipper of U-18 and U-101. The award was made on 18 November 1941. 39th was Kapitanleutnant FRIEDERICH GUGGENBERGER (269-+-1987), Skipper of U-81 when they sank the carrier HMS ARK ROYAL and damaged the battleship HMS MALAYA. The award was made 10 December 1941.
